Profile of the anophelia fauna and risk of transmission in an urban area of the Brazilian Amazon that is difficult to control in malaria – population dynamics, seasonality, behavior and resistance to insecticides

This project aims to characterize the anopheles population of Barcelos in different aspects: population structure, resistance to insecticides, adult behavior, control methods, aiming the development of new control strategies.
Although the reduction of malaria has been achieved in most of the Brazilian endemic municipalities, a few, however, have found it difficult to keep up with this favorable pattern, reaching an increase in notifications in 2015 compared to 2014. Barcelos, in the state of Amazonas, between them. With a 350% increase in the registration of cases in 2014 compared to 2013 (453 for 2,040 cases) and 14.3% in 2015 compared to 2014 (January to October), the municipality became the 5th in (IPA 137.7) of the Rio Negro basin, surpassing the transmission risk of São Grabriel da Cachoeira (IPA 91.0) and Manaus (IPA 3.2). Surprisingly, the increase in the urban area was 79%, while in the rural area it was 10% and in the indigenous area there was a reduction of 19%. This finding is unexpected given the greater accessibility of the urban area to the actions of endemic control and instigates questions about factors involved in the perpetuation and intensification of endemic malaria. In this context, it is understood that an investigation of the existing relation of the occurrence of cases with entomological factors, such as the positioning of breeding sites, distribution and behavior of vector species and anopheles resistance profile to insecticides used in vector control, will help to understand the dynamics of transmission and the causes of the perpetuation and intensification of malaria and to outline adequacies in the anti-malaria actions that favor its control. Larvae collected in different breeding sites will be analyzed by low coverage sequencing and the genetic data compared geographically and seasonally. In addition, adults will be tested for resistance to insecticides. It is intended to generate new entomological surveillance and control tools to control malaria transmission.
