Development and evaluation of cerebral antimalarial activity of lipid core nanocapsules containing lumefantrine and artemeter
Objectives
The project aims to develop and evaluate lipid core nanocapsules containing lumefantrine and artemether to enhance the treatment of malaria, particularly cerebral malaria, which poses significant health risks.
Malaria is a disease of high occurrence in tropical countries. In Brazil, for example, it is commonly found in the Amazon rainforest region, making many victims every year. This disease is caused by protozoa that are transmitted to humans through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. The great majority of antimalarials present toxicity reports, making treatment difficult for the patient. Late diagnosis and treatment may result in worsening of the disease leading to liver, respiratory, cardiovascular, brain and gastric problems. Cerebral malaria is the most serious form of the disease and is increasingly found. Artemether and lumefantrine have been widely used as a function of the resistance of parasites. In recent years, studies have shown that an effective approach to optimizing the pharmacological action of drugs is to associate the active molecule with a submicron release system. Nanotechnology has been shown to be an important alternative to reestablish the use of existing drugs. In addition, there are few reports to date of studies using nanotechnology to associate antimalarial drugs.
