The National Multisectoral Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination (Plan stratégique national multisectoriel d’élimination du paludisme – PSNMEP) 2026–2030 serves as the national framework for the progressive elimination of malaria in Burkina Faso, grounded in principles of equity.

Despite significant progress made between 2002 and 2025, malaria remains the leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and hospitalization in health facilities. The majority of health districts fall into high or very high-risk categories, confirming the persistence of intense and heterogeneous transmission that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations—specifically children under five, pregnant women, internally displaced persons, and communities living in hard-to-reach areas.

Goal: The goal of the PSNMEP 2026–2030 is to contribute sustainably to improving the population’s health status by ensuring universal, equitable, and non-discriminatory access to malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services.

Objectives: To achieve this goal, the following strategic objectives have been defined:

  1. Reduce malaria-related mortality by 90% by the end of 2030;
  2. Reduce malaria-related morbidity by 90% by the end of 2030;
  3. Strengthen the performance, resilience, and accountability of the health system, as well as multisectoral governance for malaria elimination.

To this end, the implementation of a coherent set of interventions will yield the following outcomes:
– malaria diagnosis at all levels;
– effective treatment of malaria cases at all levels;
– prevention through medication and vaccination;
– effective and efficient vector control;
– strengthened communication;
– multisectoral coordination, accountability, and leadership at all levels;
– availability of resources;
– strengthening of planning, surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, and research.

The PSNMEP 2026–2030 serves as a strategic planning tool, a coordination framework, and an advocacy instrument for resource mobilization at both national and international levels.
