Development and marketing of an original diagnostic device for malaria

Objectives

The FSO Magdimal project uses one of the methods using haemozoin to diagnose malaria; the project aims to develop and commercialize a diagnostic device for malaria. During the FSO, the project focuses mainly on the design and production of the prototype, as well as the analytical and biological validation of the prototype.

Rationale and Abstract

Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by different species of Plasmodium, affecting nearly 200 million people around the world and causing nearly 600,000 deaths. The low availability and / or cost of detection methods for parasitaemia imply frequent use of antimalarials without precise diagnosis, which results in over-consumption of treatments and the emergence of resistance. The need for malaria screening tests is therefore crucial, as current tests (microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests) have shown their limits, whether in terms of the need for specialized personnel or for the detection of low parasitaemias. Numerous tests, based on various technologies (antigen detection, automated microscopy, nucleic acid detection, hemozoin detection or spectral methods) are currently under development.
