National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) of Mozambique: 2012 – 2016

This document presents the Plano Estratégico da Malária (PEM) 2012 – 2016, which was developed through a multisectoral and participatory approach involving all partners of the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP). This plan follows the achievements and progress made by the NMCP in implementing the Malaria Strategic Plan 2006–2009.

Vision of the National Malaria Control Program: A malaria-free Mozambique, thereby contributing to poverty reduction.

Mission of the National Malaria Control Program: To lead and coordinate the implementation of effective malaria control interventions in order to prevent and reduce morbidity.

Overall Objective: To reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by half by 2016, relative to 2009 levels.

Specific Objectives:

1. By 2014, ensure 100% of districts have the capacity to manage malaria control activities.
2. By 2014, ensure 100% of the population has access to at least one malaria prevention method.
3. By 2014, test 100% of suspected malaria cases presenting at health units and in communities (via community health workers) and treat them in accordance with national guidelines.
4. By 2016, reach 100% of the population with information on malaria prevention and treatment.
5. By 2014, strengthen surveillance, monitoring, and evaluation systems so that 100% of districts have the capacity to regularly report key malaria indicators.
