Repositioning of antimalarial drugs and study of in vitro and in vivo combinations on Leishmania spp
Objectives

This proposal aims at an experimental model of standardized in vitro and in vivo screening that evaluates the repositioning of antimalarial drugs on the action in Leishmania spp., including local isolates of L. baziliensis from from the Collection/ FIOCRUZ (tests with promastigotes forms).

Although neglected tropical diseases have received attention in recent years, the availability of alternative medicines is still limited; between 2000 and 2011, less than 0.5% were registered for leishmaniasis. An alternative to this limitation is the repositioning of drugs used against other protozoa, such as Plasmodium ssp.; this strategy may accelerate research in the treatment and prevention of leishmaniasis. It is expected that antimalarials may constitute a promising profile in the cost-effectiveness of the treatment of leishmaniasis due to their proven action on intracellular microorganisms, because they are safe when administered in adequate therapeutic doses, because they are easy to administer (orally), because they are inexpensive and because there is a limited amount of research associated with the repositioning of these drugs as a chemotherapeutic alternative for LT.
