Surveillance of the in vitro sensitivity profile of Plasmodium sp. reference drugs and study of drugs with antimalarial potential against circulating strains in Rondônia

The project aims to monitor the sensitivity of Plasmodium species to reference antimalarial drugs and exploring new therapeutic options in Rondônia. It aims to address the challenges posed by treatment failures, particularly with Chloroquine for P. vivax, by implementing ex vivo surveillance to enhance disease management.
The State of Rondônia is one of those responsible for the highest prevalence of malaria in the North Region, with notification of 8.5 cases/100,000 inhabitants recorded in the period from 2000 to 2011. This context combined with the spread of multiresistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent species, and the failure of Chloroquine treatment for P. vivax malaria reported in several countries, including Brazil, reinforce the need to implement this proposal for ex vivo surveillance in OR, which could serve as a useful instrument in the monitoring and surveillance of this disease, in addition to the search for new therapeutic options.
