Maisha ACT (Antimalarial Consumption Tracker)

Published: 07/05/2025

What is Maisha ACT?

The Maisha Antimalarial Consumption Tracker (ACT) is Africa’s most comprehensive dashboard suite tracking malaria medicines, offering unprecedented visibility into both private and public sector antimalarial markets. It integrates monthly updated pharmaceutical trade data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, donor procurement records from the Global Fund, and patient-level retail sales from Maisha Meds’ network of private pharmacies, clinics, and drugshops across East Africa and Nigeria.

The platform consists of three linked dashboards:

  • Finished Products—Trade Data: International shipment and donor procurement records of finished antimalarials into African countries (~80% of known continental volumes, 49 countries), by API, brand, WHO prequalification status, and price.
  • KSM/API—Trade Data: Worldwide trade of key starting materials (e.g., artemisinin) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (e.g., artesunate), covering ~70–80% of known global volumes.
  • Finished Products—Last-mile Data: Patient-level sales from private health facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria, via Maisha Meds’ point-of-sale software, updated daily.

Together, they allow users to explore sales volumes, pricing, and trade/manufacturing origins across the supply chain, from raw materials to last-mile patient sales.
