National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) of Somalia: 2017 – 2020

This document includes the vision, mission, mandate, values, situation analysis, goals and strategic objectives in relation to all malaria prevention, treatment and elimination activities in Somalia for the period 2017-2020.

Vision: A malaria free Somalia which contributes towards further social and economic development and growth across the nation.

Mission: Through an integrated health systems approach, the Malaria Control and Elimination programme with the involvement of communities and in coordination with all partners and relevant sectors, will expand and sustain and monitor implementation of high quality evidence based control and elimination interventions.

Goal: By 2020 and in line with the Regional Malaria Action Plan and Global Technical Strategy;

1. ensure there is interruption of local Plasmodium falciparum transmission in 25% of the regions;
2. prepare 50% of regions for pre-elimination (malaria incidence <1 case per 1000) in which there has been historically low transmission; and
3. reduce malaria case morbidity and mortality by 40% in endemic areas

Objectives: The overall objectives of the 2017-2020 NMSP are:

• to consolidate the achievements of the previous NSPs
• to maintain and increase equitable coverage of interventions for all at risk populations including IDPs and mobile populations where geographically relevant; and
• to enhance national surveillance systems and community based case management to promote an enabling environment in which to move towards malaria elimination in areas of continually low transmission.
