Target identification of the new PyAz90 antimalarial

This project proposes the use of a new tool developed for screening high-throughput compound libraries and identifying new transmission blocking (TB) profile compounds.
Malaria is a preventable, diagnosable and treatable disease. However, it causes thousands of deaths every year and millions of people are still in danger. There is an urgent need to eliminate malaria as drug resistance is re-emerging. There is general agreement that elimination is not simply a matter of increasing the use of available tools. New strategies, such as broadcast blocking, will be needed. The lab has focused on the search for transmission blocking (TB) compounds. Among the newly identified compounds, one of them (PyAz90) represents a class of compounds with unknown antiplasmodial activity. This will allow the development of more studies with PyAz90, which has already shown an expressive capacity to block transmission, in addition to inhibiting the asexual stages of Plasmodium falciparum in vitro.
