MESA Forum: Updates on the WHO guidance for pfhrp2/3 gene deletions surveillance and recently completed surveys

The MESA Alliance would like to invite you to participate in the upcoming forum,“Updates on the WHO guidance for pfhrp2/3 gene deletions surveillance and recently completed surveys”.

The MESA Forums by the Community of Practice on pfhrp2/3 gene deletions provide a collaborative space for researchers, policymakers, and program implementers to discuss emerging evidence, methodologies, and challenges related to Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2/3 (pfhrp2/3) gene deletions. These deletions compromise the effectiveness of HRP2-based rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), posing a threat to malaria case detection and surveillance efforts.

In December 2024, WHO updated the Master Protocol for Surveillance of pfhrp2/3 Deletions and Biobanking to Support Future Research and the “Response Plan to pfhrp2 gene deletions. In this session, participants will hear about the most relevant modifications to consider for surveillance planning, and have the opportunity to directly address their questions to the WHO specialists involved in this guidance. A key focus of the discussion will be on experiences from recent country surveys conducted in Kenya and South Sudan. These case studies will not only cover their methods and findings, but also highlight implementation challenges and lessons learned, providing valuable insights for future surveillance efforts.
