National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) of Burkina Faso: 2016 – 2020

The National Malaria Control Programme (PNLP) has developed three strategic plans that were subsequently adopted and implemented. A performance review of the national malaria control program, conducted in 2016 using the WHO methodology, highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of these efforts and identified key strategic directions for the future.

To this end, the Plan Stratégique National de Lutte contre le Paludisme (PSNLP) 2016-2020 took into account the challenges identified in order to achieve the set objectives.

Goal: “Contribute to improving the population’s health status by reducing the burden of malaria by 2020.”

Objectives: To achieve this goal, the following have been adopted:-

1. Reduce the malaria mortality rate in Burkina Faso by at least 40% compared to 2015 levels by the end of 2020;
2. Reduce the incidence of malaria in Burkina Faso by at least 40% compared to 2015 levels by the end of 2020;
3. Strengthen the capacity of the National Malaria Control Programme (PNLP) to manage malaria control efforts in Burkina Faso by the end of 2020.

Strategic areas: To this end, the following strategies have been adopted in this plan: parasitological diagnosis of malaria, antimalarial treatment, vector control, malaria prevention in pregnant women, malaria chemoprevention in children, strengthening communication, securing the supply of commodities, monitoring and evaluation/research, epidemic control/emergency management, and management of malaria control efforts.
