Quantifying the protective gap of indoor residual spraying (IRS): Assessing the extent of wall modifications after spraying with SumiShield® or Actellic®

Objectives

The overall objective of this project is to assess the extent of wall modifications for 9 months after IRS application in southern Mozambique.

Rationale and Abstract

In Mozambique, long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is the first-line vector control tool. Universal coverage (throughout the country) was achieved in 2017: In (1) Maputo province (through the Mozambican, Swaziland, South Africa alliance or MOSASWA) and in (2) Zambezia province (Presidents Malaria Initiative or PMI), indoor residual spraying (IRS) is added as a supplementary vector control tool.

Despite these tools in place, transmission of parasites persists, a phenomenon that is referred to as residual malaria transmission. This residual transmission can be mediated by the residual efficacy of the insecticides applied, as well as by (changes in) mosquito and/or human behaviour that reduce mosquito contact with the insecticides. Whilst the residual effect of IRS insecticides and changes in mosquito traits are being monitored, human behaviours that may affect IRS efficacy (such as replastering, painting or washing of treated wall surfaces) are not. This study aims to quantify the frequency of those human behaviours over time. Together with data on the residual effect of insecticides and information on mosquito bionomics, the protective gap of IRS will be quantified, which will allow designing appropriate mitigation strategies.

Study Design

The study will be performed in Boane and Matutuine districts, Maputo Province, Mozambique.

The study will be carried out for a period of 9 months and will start immediately after the NMCP initiates their annual IRS campaign (expected to be in August 2018). Wall modifications are studied in two different house types. The same households will be visited every month. Surveys/interviews to collect information will be conducted.
