Modelling the impact of antimalarial treatment on severe disease

Objectives

The main aim of this project is to explore patterns of severe disease in different settings and characterise the impact of antimalarial treatment on reducing severe disease and mortality in Africa.
Specific Objectives are to:

  1. compare the distributions of severe disease manifestations in different transmission settings;
  2. quantify the impact of antimalarial treatment for uncomplicated malaria on preventing progression to severe disease and specific disease phenotypes, give access to current antimalarial drugs, and estimate the number of severe cases averted with improved access to treatment;
  3. explore patterns of drug-specific treatment coverage and treatment failure in different African settings; and
  4. estimate effectiveness of current antimalarials in different settings based on the information from household surveys including reported fever prevalence, reported treatment for fever as well as microscopy and RDT diagnosis.
