Mekong Basin Disease Surveillance (MBDS)
Objectives
The main areas of focus of the network are to:
- improve cross-border infectious disease outbreak investigation and response by sharing surveillance data and best practices in disease recognition and reporting, and by jointly responding to outbreaks;
- develop expertise in epidemiological surveillance across the countries; and
- enhance communication between the countries.
MBDS established 16 functioning cross-border sites at major crossings between the six countries.
The purpose of these sites is to facilitate cross-border teams of health, customs, immigration, and border officials to undertake joint outbreak investigation and response. National MBDS coordinators and adjacent provincial site coordinators exchange routine surveillance data about suspected outbreaks.
