Identification of factors defining vector competence in blood sucking insect using biological effects of sugars

Objectives

This study aims to identify the determining factors by comprehensively analyzing the midgut microbiota and expressed genes of vectors that have ingested sugars that alter the midgut environment, using malaria parasite-Anopheles mosquito infection and Leishmania parasite-Sandfly infection as models.

Rationale and Abstract

The success or failure of pathogen development and infectivity acquisition transmitted by blood-sucking insects (vectors) is thought to be determined by the combination of pathogen and vector species. However, the factors that determine the success or failure of development remain unclear. The results of this study will not only shed light on the mystery of pathogen transmission, but will also lead to the creation of new vector control methods using sugars.
