Genetic strategies for controlling vector-borne diseases: Applications in Wolbachia field trials and whole vector genome analysis
Objectives
This project aims to study the conditions in which it becomes possible to control diseases transmitted by vectors, more specifically malaria and dengue, through the use of interventions based on genetic procedures.
Predictions about the new distribution of genes or bacteria that interfere with the vector capacity of insect vectors should take into account the current natural distribution of resistance to infections by human pathogens in these vectors. These predictions reflect the nature of the evolutionary forces that maintain genetic variation and resistance to infection in those bacteria in vector populations that will be subjected to a continuous process of artificial selection imposed from external sources represented by these intervention strategies.
