Field performance of the malaria highly sensitive rapid diagnostic test in a setting of varying malaria transmission
Objectives
The objective of this study is to determine the field sensitivity and specificity of the highly sensitive rapid diagnostic test (HS-RDT) as compared to a PCR reference test.
These values will be used to predict the effect of mass testing and treatment (MTAT) campaigns with HS-RDT on malaria prevalence using a mathematical model.
A cross-sectional survey was conducted over a month (November-December 2017) in 47 villages in eastern Gambia.
Individual finger-prick blood samples were collected for HS-RDT and quantitative PCR to diagnose malaria infections.
An existing deterministic age-structured dynamic model of malaria transmission was used to estimate the impact of MTAT with HS-RDT (compared to no intervention) on malaria prevalence and the proportion of clinical malaria cases averted.
