Development of serum surveillance tools for the detection of Plasmodium vivax infections and monitoring for the control and elimination of malaria in countries in the Amazon region
Objectives
The goal of this project is to develop standardized serological tools to monitor recent and past exposure to Plasmodium vivax and support malaria elimination efforts in the Amazon region.
A consortium formed by Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, University of São Paulo, Instituto Superiore di Sanità, Université Catholique de Louvain and Medicai Research Council Unit aims to contribute to the elimination of malaria in the Amazon Region. For this, standardized serological tools will be developed to precisely monitor short and long-term changes in the transmission of Plasmodium vivax. Based on blood samples from individuals infected with Plasmodium vivax, derived from South American cohorts, antigens from the parasite will be identified for detection of recent (≤6 months) or late (6-24 months) exposure. During the search for these antigens, several aspects of the immune response will be considered for the selection of the best candidates, such as immunogenicity, specificity, antigenic diversity, antibody longevity and statistical analysis. Once defined, these antigens will be incorporated into standard assays (ELISA) and / or “highthroughput” platforms for the generation of tools. These tools will later be assessed for their potentials to monitor changes in malaria transmission in ecological sites in the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon.
