Controlling malaria in tropical Africa: Containing artemisinin resistance
Objectives
This study aim to suppress malaria transmission and contain ART-R in tropical Africa by integrating insecticide-treated ceiling nets, a new vector control method, with mass drug administration (MDA), a pioneering research initiative conducted by the principal investigator.
Ceiling nets alone have already been shown to be highly effective in suppressing malaria transmission and to be well accepted by residents. A cluster randomized controlled trial will be conducted in the border areas of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda along Lake Victoria to evaluate the new integrated strategy. Clusters will be created in two target areas, and participants will be divided into three groups: ceiling nets + MDA, ceiling nets only, and control. Malaria infection and onset, vector mosquitoes, and ART-R will be monitored for two years after the intervention.
