National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) of Cabo Verde: 2009 – 2013

Over the past 15 years, the incidence of malaria in Cabo Verde has been very low, confined to the island of Santiago—where autochthonous transmission occurs almost exclusively—with fewer than 100 cases recorded since 1996. However, the threshold of cases per 1,000 inhabitants was exceeded twice during the last decade: notably in 2000 in the Municipality of Santa Catarina and in 2001 in the Municipality of Praia. The overall objective of the Plano Estratégico de Pré – Eliminação do Paludismo 2009 – 2013 is to initiate control of known foci and implement correct, reliable procedures that enable progress toward the elimination phase.

Overall objective: Reduce malaria transmission to less than 1 case per 1,000 inhabitants per year nationwide prior to the elimination phase.

Specific objectives:

1. Detect early and effectively treat all malaria cases and reduce the risk of parasite importation
2. Minimize vector longevity and density in transmission foci
3. Monitor and track implementation levels and intervention outcomes
4. Strengthen the health system to meet the program’s needs
