National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) of Benin: 2006 – 2010

This Plan Stratégique National de Lutte contre le Paludisme (PSNLP) au Benin 2006 – 2010 aims to scale up priority malaria control interventions, based on the new national malaria control policy. It takes into account numerous major challenges that must be addressed across various areas in order to achieve the Abuja targets.

Vision: The vision for malaria control in Benin, as in the African Region, is for malaria to cease being a public health problem by 2030.
Mission: The mission of the National Malaria Control Programme is to ensure universal access to malaria prevention and treatment in order to reduce malaria-related mortality and morbidity rates among the population. This 2006–2010 Strategic Plan aims to enable the Programme to strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to malaria control needs and to ensure political and technical leadership, widespread information dissemination, and the coordination of partner activities.

Goal: The goal of the 2006–2010 national strategic plan is to contribute to improving the health status
of the population of Benin.

Overall objective:
To reduce malaria-related mortality and morbidity by 50% by 2010, compared to 2001 levels.

Specific objectives: By 2010, compared to 2001:-

• Ensure adequate management of 80% of uncomplicated malaria cases among children under 5 years of age—at home and in the community—within 24 hours of symptom onset;
• Ensure adequate management of 80% of uncomplicated malaria cases in health facilities;
• Ensure correct management of 80% of severe malaria cases in accordance with the national malaria control policy;
• Ensure that 80% of children under 5 years of age use insecticide-treated mosquito nets;
• Ensure that 80% of pregnant women use insecticide-treated mosquito nets;
• Ensure intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine for 80% of pregnant women;
