This Plano Nacional de Eliminação da Malária (PNEM) 2022 – 2035 aims to define the objectives and strategies for the proposal to eliminate malaria in Brazil, reaching fewer than 68,000 cases by 2025 and fewer than 14,000 cases by 2030, and achieving the ultimate goal of eliminating the disease by 2035.

Vision: A Brazil free of autochthonous malaria.

Global goal: Eliminate malaria transmission by 2035 (zero autochthonous cases).

Intermediate milestones:

  • Reduce incidence to fewer than 68,000 cases by 2025.
  • Reduce malaria incidence to fewer than 14,000 cases by 2030.
  • Reduce the number of deaths to zero by 2030.
  • Eliminate P. falciparum malaria transmission by 2030.

Elimination plan phases

  • Phase 1: Preparing the country for elimination
    • Reach fewer than 68,000 cases by 2025.
  • Phase 2: Consolidating the reduction
    • Reduce the number of deaths to zero by 2030.
    • Eliminate P. falciparum malaria transmission by 2030.
  • Phase 3: Elimination
    • Maintain the country free of malaria deaths from 2030 onwards.
    • Maintain the country free of P. falciparum malaria from 2030 onwards.
    • Eliminate malaria transmission by 2035.
  • Phase 4: Prevention of the re-establishment of malaria transmission
    • Maintain the country free of malaria from 2035 onwards.
