Bioko Island Malaria Control Project (BIMCP) – Phase II
Objectives
This project aims to consolidate the massive malaria transmission reductions achieved in Phase I and shift focus toward capacity-building for sustainable control.
Project Interventions:
-
Supplemental Vector Control: Introduced the mass distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) and early trials of Larval Source Management (LSM) to supplement IRS in urban centers like Malabo.
-
Enhanced Surveillance: Scaled up a robust Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) framework, optimizing household tracking using early Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping.
-
Social & Behavior Change Communication (SBCC): Heavily expanded Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) programs to increase community compliance with IRS spray teams and net usage.
-
Transition Foundation: Laid the groundwork for clinical trials by forming the Equatorial Guinea Malaria Vaccine Initiative (EGMVI) toward the end of this phase (2013), which eventually led to the project evolving into the Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project (BIMEP) in later years.
