Genetic profiling of a malaria parasite mosquito vector in scenario of malaria elimination in the Brazilian amazon

Rationale and Abstract

Fluctuations in the genetic diversity of mosquito Anopheles populations, malaria vectors, have been studied under many conditions but not under malaria elimination. Such scenario has recently been created through active intervention in some localities in the Brazilian Amazon. It is hypothesized that absence of parasite may cause shifts of genetic traits in mosquito populations, i.e., towards parasite susceptibility, which will be readily quantifiable and potentially useful for mosquito control. This project stems from the rising optimism of parasite elimination and filling knowledge gaps on the dynamics of disease transmission might help lessen possible setbacks observed in earlier (1960’s) malaria eradication programs.
