Structure-function analysis of the P. vivax Duffy Binding Protein (PvDBP) and its corresponding receptor DARC
Objectives
In order to understand the host-parasite interactions during invasion of the human erythrocyte, this project aims to:
- investigate several highly relevant questions regarding the use of PvDBP as a vaccine candidate using P. knowlesi expressing PvDBP as a surrogate for P. vivax; and
- to genetically manipulate the human erythrocyte with the help of recently developed methodology.

Malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax is still causing huge socio-economic problems and morbidity in the affected populations. The lack of a profound understanding of parasite biology hampers novel ways to battle the disease. The invasion of host erythrocytes is a key step for the successful establishment of an infection in the human body. However, in case of P. vivax, the absence of an in vitro culture system has so far strongly limited our understanding of this pivotal process. This study aims to investigate key receptor-ligand interactions involved in the invasion of P. vivax.
