Welcome Sanger Institute Call for Applications: International Fellowship Positions

The Wellcome Sanger Institute calls for applications for its International Fellowship Positions, offering up to six exceptional early-career scientists the chance to join a world-leading genomic research hub.

Located south of Cambridge, the Institute is dedicated to exploring genomic technologies at scale to advance our understanding of human biology and improve global health outcomes. This program invites researchers from across the globe to contribute their innovative ideas to one of Sanger’s six core research programs, fostering a unique environment of interdisciplinary collaboration. Successful fellows will join a vibrant community of over 1,300 professionals dedicated to tackling some of the most complex challenges in genomics today.

Fellowship Eligibility:

  • You are typically an early-mid career group leader/faculty usually up to nine years post PhD, based at a research organisation in a low- or middle-income country (LMIC). You may hold a faculty or equivalent position and are seeking to establish or strengthen your research team to develop an internationally recognised research portfolio. We also welcome applicants with equivalent experience, including those who have taken career breaks or followed non-traditional paths
  • Your main research aims should be focused on your local country and research priorities which contributes to or complements the Institute’s scientific strategy through their expertise.

Funding details:

  • Each fellow is awarded a generous stipend of £100,000 to cover essential research costs, including sequencing, staff support, and international travel to attend critical scientific conferences.
  • Beyond financial backing, the program grants full access to the Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities, such as industrial-scale data generation platforms and high-powered scientific computing infrastructure. This fellowship is designed to empower researchers to scale their projects while maintaining strong connections with their home institutions, facilitating global knowledge exchange and capacity building.
