The Company of Biologists Call for Applications: 2025 Grants
The Company of Biologists announces different grants for 2025: JCS- FocalPlane Training Grants, Scientific Meeting Grants, Small Meeting Grants, Travelling fellowships and DMM Conference Travel Grant.
JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants:
Journal of Cell Science (JCS) and FocalPlane offer Training Grants of up to £1,000 to early-career researchers wanting to attend microscopy training courses that will benefit their research in the field of cell biology.
These training grants can be used to cover the registration fees, accommodation and/or travel costs associated with attending such a course and are designed to support those who wouldn’t otherwise have sufficient funding to attend.
Deadline dates for application:
- 7 March 2025 (decision by week commencing 21 April 2025)
- 6 June 2025 (decision by week commencing 28 July 2025)
- 5 September 2025 (decision by week commencing 20 October 2025)
- 7 November 2025 (decision by week commencing 15 December 2025)
Scientific Meeting Grants of up to £6,000 are available to help finance a range of charitable activities including (but not limited to) meetings, workshops, and conferences in the fields relevant to our journals in order to encourage and support scientific interaction.
Grants can be used to cover expenses such as a plenary or keynote speaker, to assist with travel for early career scientists, or to reduce (or waive) registration fees.
Deadline dates for application:
- 7 March 2025 (decision w/c 12 May 2025)
- 16 May 2025 (decision w/c 14 July 2025)
- 1 August 2025 (decision w/c 6 October 2025)
- 7 November 2025 (decision w/c 19 January 2026)
Applications for grants of up to £400 to cover the cost of running a small meeting, either in-person or virtually, within the fields of our journals. This would normally be a local meeting taking place on one day and with a maximum budget of £1,000.
Ongoing submission deadline.
The Company of Biologists’ journals – Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology and Disease Models & Mechanisms – offer Traveling Fellowships of up to £3,000 to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers wishing to make collaborative visits to other laboratories. These are designed to offset the cost of travel/accommodation and other related expenses. There is no restriction on nationality.
Deadline dates for applications:
- 2 May 2025 (for travel after 16 June 2025*)
- 8 August 2025 (for travel after 22 September 2025*)
- 24 October 2025 (for travel after 8 December 2025*)

Disease Models & Mechanisms (DMM) offers Conference Travel Grants of up to £600 to early-career researchers wanting to attend in-person and virtual meetings, conferences, workshops and training courses that relate to the scope of the journal. We also welcome applications from independent group leaders and PIs with no independent funding.
Deadline dates for applications:
- 30 May 2025 (for travel after 21 July 2025*)
- 29 August 2025 (for travel after 13 October 2025*)
- 1 October 2025 (for travel after 8 December 2025*)
