The Royal Society Call for Applications: Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship

The Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship from The Royal Society offers a recognised first step into an independent research career for outstanding postdoctoral scientists and engineers who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances, such as caring responsibilities or health issues.

The scheme provides funding for five years covering:

  • Research Fellows salary: 80% of the basic salary costs up to £41,340 in the first year, estates costs and indirect costs
  • Contribution to research expenses of £13,000 in year one and £11,000 per year thereafter. Furthermore, the Society will provide up to £40,000 enhanced research expenses in financial year 2022/23 (1 October 2022 – 31 March 2023).

Eligibility:

  • You are ready to take the next steps to develop your independent research career; you must take the leading role in the project
  • You are in the early stages of your research career having up to six years of research experience since your PhD by the closing date of the round. Career breaks are taken into account – please refer to the scheme notes for further details
  • You do not hold a permanent post (including proleptic or rolling contract of employment) in a university or not-for-profit organisation
  • You do not hold, or have not previously held, a fellowship that provides an opportunity to establish an independent research group and therefore independent research status
