Malaria parasites ‘invisible’ to rapid tests: A conversation with Selam Mihreteab (Eritrea)

The vast majority of malaria rapid diagnostic tests used around the world are based on the detection of P. falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (pfHRP2). But the WHO has recently warned of a serious threat related to the emergence of parasites not expressing the HRP2 protein which are, therefore, undetectable by this type of rapid tests. We spoke with Selam Mihreteab, manager of the National Malaria Control Programme in Eritrea, one of the focal persons involved in the national response to this new challenge.
