The Mentor Initiative Call for Applications: 5-day training course on Vector Borne Disease (VBD)

The MENTOR Initiative is delighted to offer a comprehensive 5-day training course on Vector Borne Disease designed specifically to strengthen the capacity of agencies to implement effective and co-ordinated vector borne disease control activities, either as a focus or as part of broader disease control activities in Mombasa, Kenya from the March 13 - 17, 2023.

The five-day course is taught by a team of MENTOR staff and outside experts from the relevant teaching fields. It is designed to be highly participatory, with a problem-based approach to teaching and learning. The objective of the training is to identify risk factors for vector borne disease infections and outbreaks including: malaria, dengue, Zika, leishmaniasis and many others. Participants will gain an understanding of the different types of diseases and prioritise key control measures in integrated vector management.

What you will learn:

  • To identify risk factors for vector borne disease infections and outbreaks and gain an understanding of the epidemiology of different types of diseases and prioritise key control measures.
  • Understand the principles of vector borne disease control including, as appropriate, surveillance and monitoring, case management (diagnosis, treatment and patient care) and effective personal and community protection strategies.
  • Be able to prepare and plan for effective priority interventions for the acute emergency context and modify programme approaches according to changes in the situation as the situation moves towards post emergency phase to reconstruction.
  • Determine the most effective co-ordination of efforts with national and international partners to address the crises.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of interventions.
  • Identify operational and technical problems requiring field research.
  • Identify and quantify project needs for proposal and budgeting development.

Who should attend:

This course is aimed at equipping both clinical and non-clinical field and HQ staff with the key skills required to identify needs, and develop, prioritise and implement evidence-based control programmes for vector borne diseases.

Course fee:

  • $1,950 – NGO rate
  • $2,495 – Full rate (commercial and others)
  • Fees include: accommodation for the five nights (starting Sunday night) and all meals during the workshop days (from Sunday evening dinner to Friday lunch).
