Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club: The malaria parasite species landscape in mainland Tanzania

Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Network (MalariaGEN) is inviting registrations for the first Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club of 2024 on “The malaria parasite species landscape in mainland Tanzania”.

Plasmodium falciparum is the most prevalent and deadliest human malaria species in sub-Saharan Africa. However, recent evidence shows that other non-falciparum Plasmodium species could be more prevalent in the region than previously thought.

  • Zach Popkin-Hall, a post-doctoral research associate at the University of North Carolina, USA, and the first author of a recent paper in The Journal of Infectious Diseases (https://academic.oup.com/jid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/infdis/jiad522/7441649?login=true) will discuss the malaria parasite species landscape in mainland Tanzania, which shows the prevalence of several non-falciparum parasites and why malaria elimination in the country will require increased surveillance and understanding of these species.
