Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club: Genetic adaptations of P. falciparum in Africa

Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Network (MalariaGEN) is inviting registrations for the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club on “Genetic adaptations of P. falciparum in Africa”.

Could genetic adaptations of P. falciparum provide a new perspective into the evolution and transmission of malaria parasites in Africa?

Date: February 20, 2024

Time: 12:00pm GMT

Speaker

  • Olivo Miotto, based in Bangkok, runs GenRe-Mekong, a genetic surveillance project in collaboration with the National Malaria Control Programmes in the Greater Mekong Subregion. In a new pre-print, together with colleagues, he identified a unique cluster of P. falciparum parasites in Africa by analysing malaria parasite genomes available on the MalariaGEN Pf7 data resource (https://academic.oup.com/jid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/infdis/jiad522/7441649?login=true). He will present evidence of genetic adaptations of P. falciparum in Africa, which provide a new perspective into the evolution and transmission of malaria parasites.
