GHIT Fund Call for Proposals: Target Research Platform (TRP) 2026

The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund) announces the Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Target Research Platform (TRP), to support the early-phase R&D discovery of new approaches, concepts, and solutions for neglected infectious diseases. 

The platform includes:

  • Standard TRP Award: Early-stage research into novel technologies.
  • Strategic Innovation and Market Assessment (SIMA) Award: Technology landscape and market strategy analysis.
  • Pandemic Preparedness and Response (PPR) Award: Development of Diagnostic prototypes and Target Product Profiles for pandemic outbreaks.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Partnership: Each proposal must include at least one Japanese organization and one non-Japanese organization (The primary focus of the TRP is to support Japanese innovation)
  • Proposals involving local partners in LICs and LMICs are highly encouraged, where they play a meaningful scientific, development, or implementation role
  • Organization Types: Includes life science companies, academic institutions, non-profits, and government research institutions.
  • Documentation: Organizations must provide a certified copy of registration and audited financial statements for the last three years (Full Stage Submission Phase)
  • Scope: Must align with GHIT’s disease scope (Malaria, TB, NTDs, diseases with pandemic potential, or public health emergencies).
  • Proposals must include preliminary data or other supporting evidence.

Compatibility/Incompatibility requirement:

  • Ineligible Pathogens: Projects targeting SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, or seasonal influenza-specific approaches are generally excluded from the pandemic potential scope.
  • Ineligible Activities: Basic studies of pathogens/human biology, community-based adherence interventions, and incremental improvements to conventional solutions are ineligible.
  • Proposals in which the Japanese partner’s role is limited to minor tasks (e.g., generating supporting data or supplying control samples) are ineligible
  • Organizational Restrictions: Organizations in countries subject to international sanctions are ineligible.

Budget: 

  • Standard TRP Award: Maximum JPY 100,000,000; 2 years
  • SIMA Award (Surveillance Assessment): Maximum JPY 50,000,000; 6 months
  • PPR Award: Maximum JPY 20,000,000; 6 months
