ASLM Workshop: Statistical Considerations for Study Design

The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is organizing a workshop on Statistical Considerations for Study Design. In this session, participants will gain a practical understanding of how statistical principles form the foundation of credible and high-quality research design.

Date: 20th of October

Time: 4:00-5:15PM EAT

Location: Online

The session will cover essential statistical concepts, including sample size determination, power analysis, randomization, and control of confounding variables, to ensure studies are well-structured and scientifically sound.

Attendees will also learn to identify and avoid common statistical pitfalls such as biased sampling, inappropriate test selection, and underpowered studies. Furthermore, the session will demonstrate how to effectively integrate statistical planning into research protocols and grant proposals, ensuring methodological rigor and reproducibility.

Through applied examples and discussions, participants will gain the confidence to design, analyze, and interpret research studies with precision and reliability.

Presenter:

  • Prof Samuel Mwalili, Professor of Statistics, Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

Moderator:

  • Mr Felix Humwa, Science Manager, ASLM
