6th RAFT TechTalk on Rice and malaria in Africa
The RAFT (Resilience Against Future Threats) through Vector Control hub research consortium would like to invite you to their 6th webinar of the TechTalk series on Emerging threats in a changing world: Rice and malaria in Africa: part of the problem or part of the solution?
Date: 13th of May.
Time: 11am UK time, (12.00h CAT).
Location: On-line.
In many African countries, the Ministry of Health is planning the pathway to malaria elimination, and meanwhile the Ministry of Agriculture is planning a massive expansion of irrigated rice. These are both desirable goals, and many international donors, including FCDO, are supporting both. Unfortunately, the agricultural goal is likely to interfere with the public heath goal: irrigated rice in Africa tends to “build-in” the malaria problem. In this webinar, we will discuss possible solutions to this problem, in the light of previous work on methane and the role of rice as a driver of climate change.
Speakers:
- Prof Jo Lines, Professor of Malaria Control and Vector Biology, LSHTM
- Kallista Chan, Senior Analyst, Costello Medical
- Abdelbagi Ismail, Principal Scientist, Regional Director for Africa, International Rice Research Institute
- Dr Pauline Chivenge, Senior Scientist, International Rice Research Institute
