Progress towards malaria elimination in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Objectives

To review and discuss the successful strategies and continued challenges encountered by the Saudi National Malaria Elimination Programme during the past decades.

Rationale and Abstract

Saudi Arabia joined the WHO global malaria eradication effort in 1963 and, by the early 1970s, transmission was arrested in the Eastern and Northern provinces, eliminating malaria in the Palaearctic ecozone. Despite this success, Saudi Arabia switched from malaria eradication to control in 1977, following the worldwide abandonment of the goal of global malaria eradication.
