Mobile Technologies For One Health Surveillance

Objectives

By mobilizing innovative digital technologies and maximizing cross-border collaboration, the CORDS networks are aiming to achieve:

  • Early disease detection through effective and timely reporting via mobile and digital tools;
  • Rapid response to outbreaks by integrating detection signals and data with existing public health prevention and response capacity;
  • Increased technical capacity, knowledge sharing, and cross-border collaboration through a new ICT Resource Centre.
Rationale and Abstract

The Southern and East African countries mostly rely on paper-based systems for surveillance of infectious diseases. Such systems place limits on rapid and reliable transfer of data and therefore hinder effective surveillance and slow down detection and response.

Following the successful implementation of a project piloting the use of mobile technologies for disease surveillance, the Southern African Network, SACIDS and the East African Network, EAIDSNet are currently working to establish a cross-national mobile phone system encompassing six border countries in East and South Africa.
