Malaria risk factors in the rural Amazon: modeling the human-environment interaction

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to obtain training in geospatial data analysis techniques applied to epidemiology.

Principal Investigators / Focal Persons

Marcelo Urbano Ferreira

Rationale and Abstract

During the stay, the rapid decline in malaria transmission in Remansinho, an area in the rural Brazilian Amazon, will be investigated. For this purpose, satellite images will be used to characterise in great detail the environmental changes that occurred in the area during the period 2010-2014. The impact of environmental changes on malaria transmission will be modelled along with other factors recognized as important. These data analysis techniques will later be used to compare malaria control measures, as proposed in the original project, for which epidemiological data are not yet fully available.
