Genomic view of the origins and adaptation of Plasmodium populations in the Americas

Objectives

*Original title in Portuguese: Visão genômica das origens e adaptação das populações de Plasmodium nas Américas

The main objective of this program is to obtain training in population genomic analysis techniques with the purpose of determining the probable populations of origin of current populations of Plasmodium spp. that were introduced to the Americas after European colonization and the transatlantic trade of enslaved Africans and identify signatures of selection and adaptation to new vectors and hosts from the New World.

Rationale and Abstract

This is a proposal for a research internship – lasting 12 months – at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, under the supervision of Dr. Joana Carneiro da Silva. This will be using public genomic data of Plasmodium spp., as well as genomic data generated from new samples obtained in Brazil, Africa and old Giemsa-stained blood smear samples prepared more than 65 years ago from patients infected with Plasmodium spp. from Vale do Sado, Portugal.
