Community empowerment based socio-cultural approach for increasing the utilization of LLINs for pregnant women in Southwest Sumba Regency
Objectives
This study aims to increase the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets among pregnant women living in highly malaria-endemic areas through a socio-cultural community empowerment approach.
This study involved three levels of society: the sub-district level, the village level (village cadres and stakeholders), and the family level (mothers-in-law). This study was preceded by an ethnographic study to identify strengthening or supporting factors for pregnant women in Southwest Sumba Regency. The results of the study indicate the importance of involving families, in this case mothers-in-law, in the empowerment program. For disease prevention in pregnant women, the interventions provided included home visits, education for mothers and families, mass education by community leaders, and supervision by cadres and community leaders. Mothers-in-law were involved as supervisors of mosquito net use at the household level. The results of the study indicate that this model was statistically significant in increasing the correct use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets among pregnant women and increasing compliance with mosquito net use among pregnant women.
