A cluster-randomised controlled trial to assess the impact of combined strategies (impregnated bed nets plus home management of malaria oriented by Rapid Diagnosis Test) on severe malaria morbidity in children aged 6 to 59 months in Burkina Faso
Objectives
This study aims to fill this gap of knowledge in order to inform policy makers for evidence-based decision making. At the same time, the study will provide data on the incidence of severe malaria in a context where these two strategies are implemented and therefore contribute to the preparation of malaria vaccine trials site.
National Center for Research and Training for Malaria (CNRFP) Burkina Faso
Impregnated bed nets and home management of malaria are individually now proven strategies that contribute to reduce the malaria burden in endemic countries. Scaling up of these strategies is now endorsed by the World Health Organization, and their implementation in the different malaria endemic countries is at various stages. It is expected that in the near future, malaria vaccines candidates’ at phase 3 of their development will be assessed in a context where these strategies are well set up. Efficacy of a vaccine candidate against severe malaria will be one of the key endpoint measures at this stage. However there is a lack of data on to which extent these two combined strategies could impact the incidence of severe malaria.
