Acquisition and maintenance of naturally acquired immunity to malaria
Objectives
The aim of this project is to elucidate the mechanisms of acquisition and maintenance of immunity to malaria and to contribute to the identification of potential vaccine target antigens.
Malaria is a potential fatal infection in non-immune individuals affecting mainly poor settings. An efficacious vaccine is urgently needed. The research team will investigate polymorphisms in P. falciparum antigen genes in individuals with different levels of exposure and immunity, and relate this diversity to the breadth and magnitude of antibody responses directed to a panel of several different antigens. The research team will assess immune responses after single infections in travelers diagnosed with malaria in Sweden and who are subsequently treated for P. falciparum malaria in a malaria free area offer a unique opportunity to study primary infections and immunological memory in the absence of re-exposure. The research team will assess the breadth, magnitude, specificity and longevity of humoral and cellular immune responses in these travelers. The immunological data will be compared to individuals with different degree of immunity residing under different levels of transmission in Sub-Saharan Africa.
