GiveWell RFI Call for Malaria Pilot Programs and Research
GiveWell opens a call for new RFI for malaria pilot programs and research and evaluation.
Organization can apply through two submission tracks:
- Pilot programs focused on malaria chemoprevention and vector control across Africa
- Category 1: antimalarial medicines
- Perennial malaria chemoprevention (PMC)
- Post-discharge malaria chemoprevention (PDMC)
- Chemoprevention in school-aged children (IPTsc)
- Category 2: vector control
- Continuous net distribution – technical assistance
- Insecticide-treated net (ITN) social and behaviour change (SBC)
- Category 1: antimalarial medicines

- Research and evaluation with potential to improve GiveWell’s future grantmaking in sub-Saharan Africa
- Category 1: Improving our cost-effectivenes analysis
- 1.1 What can we learn from recent, primary data on malaria burden and epidemiology in high-burden countries of Africa?
- 1.2 What is the effectiveness and impact of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) in current implementation contexts?
- 1.3 What is the effectiveness and impact of insecticide-treated net campaigns in current implementation contexts?
- 1.4a What are the effects of malaria on all-cause mortality? (Mendelian randomization leveraging sickle cell trait)
- 1.4b What are the effects of malaria on long-term individual income? (Mendelian randomization leveraging sickle-cell trait)
- 1.5 What is the performance of malaria rapid diagnostic tests in implementation settings?
- Category 2: Intervention research including randomized controlled trials
- 2.1 Can alternative drug regimens improve the effectiveness or cost-effectiveness of SMC?
- 2.2 Is weekly hydroxychloroquine a cost-effective addition to intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnant women (IPTp)?
- 2.3 Can single low-dose primaquine (SLDPQ) prevent transmission of artemisinin-resistant malaria?
- 2.4 What is the impact of spatial emanators on malaria burden in high-burden settings?
- Catergory 3: Optimizing delivery of existing programs.
- 3.1 Optimizing delivery of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC)
- 3.2 Monitoring the effects of ITN mass campaign cost-cutting
- 3.3 ITN and SMC mass campaign co-delivery
- Category 1: Improving our cost-effectivenes analysis

Eligibility:
Pilot programs focused on malaria chemoprevention and vector control across Africa.
- Large non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are currently active in malaria program implementation or evaluation
- Smaller or local NGOs with demonstrated implementation capacity and experience in the proposed geographic setting
- Academic institutions or research groups, particularly those partnering with an implementing organization
- Large multilateral organizations with relevant expertise
- Organizations currently implementing malaria programs that are interested in adding a rigorous evaluation component
Joint proposals from consortia representing multiple institutions are welcome.
For logistical reasons, GiveWell is unable to fund Ministries of Health (MoHs) directly through this RFI; however, MoH staff can be included as collaborators on projects led by other organizations.
