Strengthening routine immunisation and vaccine engagement in SMC areas of Togo (StRIVE-Togo)

Objectives

This project addresses malaria and routine vaccine-preventable diseases through community engagement, identification of zero-dose and under-immunised children, data-driven outreach and strengthened partner coordination.

Specific Objectives:

  1. Increase demand and awareness for malaria and routine vaccines through caregiver and community engagement.
  2. Reduction of zero-dose and under-immunised children through identification and strengthened outreach services.
  3. Strengthen learning and advocacy for effective community-based malaria vaccine service delivery and increased ownership.

Rationale and Abstract

The StRIVE implementation project aims to strengthen routine immunisation and support effective uptake of the R21 vaccine. It builds on the Zero Dose project, which integrated vaccine data collection and communication into Togo’s seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) campaign. (SMC involves door-to-door delivery of antimalarial medicines to children under five at regular intervals during peak malaria transmission season.) The Zero Dose project strengthened coordination between the EPI and Malaria Consortium and has informed a more sustainable, community-centred approach that aligns with the R21 schedule. StRIVE is being implemented year round across 23 high-burden districts in Togo’s four northern regions, complementing existing health platforms and targeting approximately 300,000 children aged under two years. The goal of this implementation project is to strengthen routine immunisation and support the introduction and uptake of the malaria vaccine in 23 high-burden seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) districts of Togo among children under two.
