Rationale and Abstract

What is the origin of the parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM) that is produced when the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, invades its host erythrocyte, and what are the contributions of host and parasite components, particularly those of the malarial rhoptry organelles in invagination of the erythrocyte membrane and subsequent establishment of the PVM? This is a long standing unresolved, question that has not received much attention recently but that is a fundamental aspect of Plasmodium biology. Newly developed genetic and imaging technologies will be applied that will allow new insight into this question.
