Establishment of a Plasmodium falciparum resistance surveillance system for antimalarial drugs in DR Congo
Objectives
This project aims to establish a Plasmodium falciparum resistance surveillance system for antimalarial drugs in DR Congo.
The DRC Ministry of Public Health describes malaria as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. In 2014, 14 million cases were recorded according to the WHO report. This situation has led to the establishment of close links between decision-makers, experts, teachers and researchers as well as the renewal of diagnostic, management, training and research tools and techniques and the constant development of new therapeutic strategies. Among other problems related to malaria control, chemo-resistance is not one of the least important. Indeed, almost all the molecules marketed to date against malaria have proved ineffective after some time of use, the causal parasite Plasmodium falciparum, having developed resistance mechanisms.
