This session will bring together African and global leaders to explore concrete strategies for building a more robust, coordinated, and Africa-led health R&D ecosystem. The session will also discuss the transformative potential of the AfCFTA in shaping markets for health innovation and strengthening local manufacturing.
Session Objectives:
- Governance and Coordination: Identify the political and technical structures needed to support a unified, continental health R&D governance mechanism
- Prioritization: Explore how African countries can set research and product development priorities aligned with local health needs and regional opportunities.
- Market Shaping and Local Manufacturing: Examine ways to incentivize local production of essential health products and align R&D priorities with Africa’s growing manufacturing capabilities.
- Sustainable Financing: Discuss innovative financing models that shift reliance from donor-led research toward increased domestic and regional investment in health R&D.
- Continental and Global Alignment: Generate momentum for including African voices and priorities in global R&D governance frameworks and decision-making platforms.
