Safety and Efficacy of Differentiated Primaquine Regimens in the Treatment of Vivax Malaria in Glucose-6-Phosphate-Dehydrogenase Deficient Patients

Objectives

In order to seek new ways to solve this obstacle to the radical cure of vivax malaria in Brazil, this study aims to assess whether the prolonged regimen of primaquine use for eight weeks and whether the late start of drug administration are effective and safe in patients with G6PD deficiency.

Rationale and Abstract

It is known that the conventional therapeutic regimen to treat vivax malaria is neither safe nor effective for use in disabled people and that, in Brazil, the use of rapid tests to detect G6PD deficiency is not yet routine in health services, leading to the unsafe use of primaquine in G6PD deficient patients and putting them at risk of hemolysis.
