Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club: Exploring the genetic diversity and population structure of Pfcsp in mainland Tanzania

Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Network (MalariaGEN) is inviting registrations for the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Journal Club on “Exploring the genetic diversity and population structure of Pfcsp in mainland Tanzania”.

Date: July 23, 2024

Time: 1:30 pm (UK time, BST)

Speaker:

  • Dr Beatus Modest Lyimo currently works as a Lecturer at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha, Tanzania, where he teaches genomics and bioinformatics. He will present a recent study exploring the genetic diversity and population structure of Pfcsp in mainland Tanzania as the country prepares to introduce malaria vaccines. The results from this study are published in Malaria Journal: https://malariajournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12936-024-04974-3
  • The study focused on P. falciparum samples collected from five regions in Tanzania with different levels of malaria transmission, which were sequenced and made available for analysis as part of the MalariaGEN Plasmodium falciparum Community (Pf7k) project.
  • By exploring the genetic diversity, population structure, and the extent of genetic variation and natural selection acting on the Pfcsp gene, Beatus and colleagues provide important baseline data for the Tanzanian Ministry of Health to consider before deploying the RTS,S/AS01 and R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccines in the country
